What is an MOT Test?
In 1960, the UK Government introduced the Ministry of Transport (MOT) test for vehicles. A MOT test is a yearly test performed on your vehicle to ensure that it has a basic level of roadworthiness.
If your vehicle is under 3 years old, you do not need to get it MOT tested.
A certified MOT technician will perform the check on your vehicle and will focus on key areas of the vehicle. This includes the brakes, lights, and windscreen wipers and performing an emissions test on the vehicle.
If the vehicle in question, passes the MOT test, a certificate of compliance is issued. This certificate is required for legal road use and is valid for a specific period, typically one year.
If the vehicle fails the MOT testing service, the owner will be provided with a list of identified issues. The required repairs will need to be made, and the vehicle must pass the re-test in order to be legally driven.
Why is an MOT Important?
Keeping up to date with your vehicle’s MOT is essential, as the test ensures that your car is safe to drive and is legally required. Factors that support your vehicle having an up-to-date MOT are listed below:
Safety
Regular MOT testing is essential for the safety of yourself and other road users. The test includes various safety checks on features of the vehicle, such as brakes, lights, tires, steering and suspension. Identifying and addressing these types of safety issues can help reduce the risk of accidents and improve overall safety on the roads.
Environmental Impact
Regular MOT checks will assess the exhaust emissions of your vehicle, ensuring your vehicle’s exhaust meets the correct standards. Regular check-ups will help control air pollution and minimise the overall environmental impact of road transport.
Legal Requirement
An annual MOT test is a legal requirement for vehicles of a certain age, typically over 3 years. Failing to comply with this legal requirement can lead to legal consequences, such as fines or restrictions on vehicle usage.
What is Tested in an MOT?
Here are some of the items which are checked during an MOT test:
- Steering
- Suspension
- Lighting and signalling equipment
- Brakes
- Drivers road views
- Tyres and wheels
- Seat belts
- Body structure
- Exhaust and fuel emissions
Can I Drive My Car Without an MOT?
Do not drive or park your vehicle on the road if your MOT has run out, as this could lead to a fine of £1000. There are two exceptions where you can drive your vehicle without an MOT:
- to or from somewhere to be repaired
- to a pre-arranged MOT test
This is why it is essential to visit your local MOT garage if you feel your vehicle may require a check-up.
How Do I Check My MOT History?
You can check your vehicle’s MOT history using the GOV. UK MOT history checker. This tool is essential as you put your registration in, and it will show you the past results of a vehicle’s MOT tests, including:
- When the next MOT is due
- The mileage recorded when it was tested
- If it passed or failed
It is very important to have accurate and up-to-date information, such as the correct registration number. This is vital as it will allow you to retrieve the correct MOT history for the vehicle you wish to know the history of.
How Do I Check My MOT Status?
You can check the status of your MOT by using the GOV.UK status checker by simply entering your registration number. It will then tell you when your MOT is due.
Do Speed Cameras Check MOT?
Speed cameras currently do not check whether you have MOT on your vehicle. Although, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras can detect whether you do.
In many cases, the response to an expired MOT from an ANPR camera will result in a notification to law enforcement. Officers will then take appropriate action.
